Advanced Reporting Syllabus and Class Organization ($300)

Report development is a skill that needs to be developed and refined over time.  Once the basics have been mastered, the inclination is to attempt more difficult and complex reports.  These higher value reports are vital to an organization because they provide greater insight into its workings.

This class will provide the student with the skills to develop a wide variety of reports ranging in complexity.  More detailed information on total fields, calculated fields and parameteRRs will be provided as well as a discussion of functions available.  This class will also address ways to connect data tables to each other in non-standard ways and go over development of various specialty reports.  The examples will be based on the sample data provided with ReportWorks.

The class will address the following topics:

Advanced Report Manipulation Techniques

Covers alternative methods of report design and defining the relationships between related databases.  It also covers the report format file and various database control options.

Analysis of database relationships and impact on report design
Description and creation of composite record-type reports
Creating n X m tabular reports
Interaction between composite record reports and query control
Categories of Secondary data file relationships (1:1, 1:Many, 1:Maybe)
Use of database indexes
Relational report development
Tour of ReportWorks "topography"
Natural and reverse Master file(s)
Identify likely linking relationship among database files
Description of "Purpose-Driven" reporting
Breakdown of existing report items into relational specifications
Creating report templates
Description of default data path search hierarchy
Use of multi-scan and related database grouping options
Using Master database scope
Advanced Data Manipulation Techniques

Covers expert strategies in modifying existing data elements to further process reports.

Using calculated and parameteRR data fields in queries
Creating "dummy" variables for banded and tabled reports
Working with functions, including CASE, date logic, User-defined
Breakdown and use of "pre-processed" data totals
Defining data exports and bursting data
Report Production Techniques

Discussion of data element presentation options.  Cover page layout options and printing / output options

Data element sizing, format, orientation and attributes
Printer fonts and control options
Best practices in layout design
Page size controls and the effect on data elements presentation and position
