Publishing today announced the first new release of ARPEGGIO since taking over development and marketing of the report writer product
line from Wall Data in September, 1999. Dubbed R&R Report Writer
SQL Edition Version 8.1 the new release provides a migration path for
ARPEGGIO users who want the best features of R&R Report Writer combined with
100% compatibility with ARPEGGIO reports. Completely re-built in Microsoft Visual Studio Version
6, this new release provides
bug fixes and many enhanced features that make R&R easier to learn and use
for end-users.
Key features include enhanced charting
options, the ability to report on Microsoft SQL Server Version 7 and Oracle
Version 8 databases, a Result Set Viewer/Export
facility - a unique report design aid that makes it easy to drill down to the
detail level and browse the information underlying a report. Color coding
of the report layout and the addition of several toolbar buttons are designed to
increase end-user productivity. In addition to these and other
enhancements, all previous service packs and patches have been integrated and
tested to provide the most powerful and stable release of R&R Report Writer
to date.
Following on the successful April release of
its sister product, R&R Xbase Edition, the R&R SQL Edition enables
customers to report on virtually any database via ODBC (Open Database
Connectivity) drivers. According to Daniel Levin, President of Liveware
Publishing, "Now that both new R&R versions share
the same source code base, enhancements to one product will immediately apply to
both in nearly every case. We can thereby focus our resources much more
efficiently and bring significant enhancements to the widest range of users in
the shortest time." Pointing to the importance of product
uniformity, Mr. Levin added, "We have dropped the ‘Data Access’ and
‘Data Organizer’ components of ARPEGGIO in this new release since we found
that very few people were using them."
Moving into the future, Version 8.1 Xbase and
SQL Editions provide
the foundation for Liveware Publishing's vision of desktop
reporting for the mass market. According to Mr. Levin, "Version
8.1 is only a start, the first step, on our path. There are a couple of key
enhancements -- viewing and exporting the Result Set, for example – that are
representative of exciting things to come." Enhancements
in ease of learning and use, in combination with the underlying technology to
work with the full result set, will set the stage for future products that make
data from a wider variety of data sources accessible to the general business
user.
R&R SQL Edition carries a list price of
$450, with Version 8.1 Upgrades available to current customers
of any previous version of ARPEGGIO or R&R for only $250. Upgrades are
being offered at a special discounted price of $200 through August 31, 2000. Quantity discounts are
