Sales Q&A
Introduction
Below are some commonly asked sales
questions about purchasing R&R ReportWorks. For product usage questions and answers, refer to the Frequently Asked
Questions page or the product documentation
page.
Q)
How is ReportWorks Licensed?
A)
ReportWorks is licensed for
concurrent report design use. This means that one serial number must be
available for each person developing or modifying reports
simultaneously on a network. No additional serial numbers are required to
run reports via the ReportWorks runtime engine, as it is licensed for
unlimited use and distribution at no cost. The runtime engine is included with
ReportWorks.
There is no separate LAN (local area network) version of ReportWorks. Every
copy can be installed and run on a network. If more than one user needs to
create reports simultaneously, more users can be added either by adding
additional single users one at a time or by purchasing a multi-user pack.
ReportWorks multi-user packs conveniently provide designer license seats for 5,
10, 25, 50 or 100 simultaneous users. Any combination of ReportWorks multi-user
packs and individual serial numbers can be installed on a network to support the
exact number of simultaneous users desired.
Q)
How are new ReportWorks
licenses installed?
A)
The R&R
installation program automatically installs the software and licensed serial
numbers. The first copy installed, whether it is a single user or a multi-user
pack, includes all of the software, support files, and the serial number/s for
the product installed. Additional users can be added quickly and easily by
purchasing additional licenses and then simply entering them using the User
Management program.
Q)
How does ReportWorks track
concurrent users?
A)
ReportWorks automatically
meters Report Designer usage as users enter and exit the Report Designer. If
all of the available serial numbers are currently in use, ReportWorks not allow
additional users to the Designer and will give a no available network user id
error. You can view the number of installed licenses and their current usage by
running the User Management program from the Report Designer program group.
Q)
Is there a separate upgrade
version available if I am migrating from a previous R&R release?
A)
There is separate upgrade part number with reduced upgrade
pricing for users who can supply proof of ownership of a previous R&R version.
The upgrade however is installed just like a full new product. You do not need
to install the upgrade on a machine containing your previous release.
Q)
Are reports created in earlier
R&R versions upwardly compatible with the latest ReportWorks release?
A)
Yes. Reports created in all
earlier releases of R&R (even as far back as the DOS version) can be opened,
viewed, and edited in the latest ReportWorks release. Any changes that are made
will need to be saved in a ReportWorks (.RRW or .RSW) report file. You will be
prompted in the Designer with a Save As message when you try to save a report
that was opened from a earlier report library file.
Q)
Do I need to open and save all
of my old reports individually or is there a utility that will convert them for
me?
A)
ReportWorks includes a simple
menu driven conversion utility that will allow you to convert from older report
formats to ReportWorks.
Q)
Does ReportWorks come with a
manual?
A)
ReportWorks does not include a
printed manual. Instead all of the documentation is provided in PDF format.
These PDF files are not installed but can be found in the \PDFDOCS folder of the
installation CD. There is also a copy of the latest Adobe Acrobat Reader in
that folder. There is also context sensitive on line Help built into the program
itself.
Q)
Can I give reports to others to
run?
A)
Yes. ReportWorks includes
report viewer executable that can be freely distributed to an unlimited number
of users. The Viewer allows users to run reports that have been created in the
Report Designer without requiring the availability of a ReportWorks designer
license. The viewer also allows end user input of a wide number of report values
such as selection of an output destination or record selection criteria. The
Viewer can be called using a simple Windows shortcut or by using one of several
application programming interfaces. ReportWorks includes a menu driven Quick
Runtime Shortcuts utility program along with extensive documentation on
Developing Applications using the Report Viewer.
Q)
What is the difference between
ReportWorks, the ReportWorks Viewer and ReportWorksLite?
A)
ReportWorks is the full
licensed Report Designer product that allows you to design reports. ReportWorks
includes the unlimited use ReportWorks Viewer that allows users to run reports
created in the Report Designer without the use of a ReportWorks license.
ReportWorksLite is separately purchased low cost product that is positioned
between the Report Designer and the Report Viewer. The Lite version uses the
same user interface as the Report Designer and allows users to make and save
limited design type changes to existing reports without being able to alter the
report’s underlying structure. The audience for Lite is typically a current
Viewer user who would like additional control to the format of the reports that
they currently run.
